This address is intended to replace wincvs.org on a long term. The new web site is hosted by Strata Inc..

As the objective of the CvsGui project is resolutely to cross the platforms barriers, the new name makes more sense for the users of MacCvs and gCvs.

Another objective will be to put more and more of the resources on SourceForge and to hire (for free !) a webmaster in order to help for the web administration of the web site.

Bandwidth gets out of control, we need 10 ftp mirror sites http://cvsgui.org/bandwidth-gets-out-of-control-we-need-10-ftp-mirror-sites/ Fri, 18 Aug 2017 11:49:56 +0000 http://cvsgui.org/?p=97 Continue readingBandwidth gets out of control, we need 10 ftp mirror sites]]> In the last years, cvsgui did grow exponentially. We need to find a proper solution for the
web hosting of the project.

3d.com & Strata Software are going to host the html site. They already offered many
internet resources for the WinCvs/MacCvs/gCvs project during these past years, including
the cvs repository, Bugzilla and the new Bonzai system. MacCvs, WinCvs and gCvs started
all in Strata Software, thanks to Gary Bringhurst the tech leader and technical VP of Strata
who initially assigned me on enhancing the initial port of cvs on Macintosh and then decided
to give away the initial MacCvs client under the Gnu Public License.

The CvsGui project is a complete volunteer project. It has been started with MacCvs in 1996 by
Mike Ladwig, Matthias Neeracher and Alexandre Parenteau. Then in 1997 came WinCvs and in
2000 gCvs. Today the project counts between 8 and 10 regular developers on several platforms
with contributions of many others. The total number of people relying on a regular basis on the clients
WinCvs/MacCvs/gCvs is believed to be between 10,000 and 40,000 developers worldwide.

The CvsGui project now needs contributions from its users : we are basically asking for ftp mirrors
around the world. In order to avoid the current situation (one of our major site cannot handle
anymore the bandwidth of the site), we need to find between 10 and 15 ftp site worldwide (5 in
North America, 3 in Europe, 2 in Asia).

We also are going to restrain the distribution of binaries and sources to the most recent version.
Thanks to the recent cvs repository, it’s not necessary anymore for whose who want to contribute to
download each time the whole source code.

If you want to contribute a little part of your ftp server to the CvsGui project, please send me an
email along with these informations :

– Technical contact for the ftp server (name and email)
– Location in the world (country and region)
– Business or University name and web adress (I personnaly will verify that : for obvious reasons,
I don’t want the cvsgui users to be hosted by some “weird kind of” business).
– Bandwidth expected
– Additional requests

The general form of the URL to provide has to be something like :

ftp://youradress.com/pub/mirrors/cvsgui (and not “WinCvs”).

The master site to ftp from is (you use cron nightly typically in order to mirror it) :

ftp://cvsgui.sourceforge.net/pub/cvsgui (between 50-100 Mb)

New bug system and other goodies http://cvsgui.org/new-bug-system-and-other-goodies/ Fri, 14 Apr 2017 11:49:06 +0000 http://cvsgui.org/?p=95 Continue readingNew bug system and other goodies]]> The project is going crazy. You are more and more to ask for support and new features. I can no longer
reply to all the messages individually, we gonna have to figure something else.

First please ask the cvs mailing list when you got a problem : there are a lot of experienced users who
can help you out to get started. And read the cvs doc ! Well, I’m sure you knew that 😉

Then use the bug database system to see if the problem you’re experiencing has been already reported.
Also I would appreciate that people spend time to compile some useful FAQs entries for the site. The
good location to submit such contributions is the bug database as well. This would help a lot the users
in general and the project in particular. I’ll be in charge to report the entries in the web site.

You’ll also note a new developer page : it’s been designed to open the cvsgui development even more,
cause a lot of you guys are welling to help.

Hopefully these new resources sponsored by my company 3d.com will help me to spend less time
answering emails and more time coding !

Enjoy !

MacCvs is back http://cvsgui.org/maccvs-is-back/ Wed, 07 Dec 2016 11:48:36 +0000 http://cvsgui.org/?p=93 Continue readingMacCvs is back]]> MacCvs is back. The reason is that I returned to work for my old company, which develops on Mac.

The major concerned was a fix in the command line. But as I did that, I did also make sure the Mac build
is gonna be as easy as is the Windows one.

Enjoy !

WinCvs has a documentation http://cvsgui.org/wincvs-has-a-documentation/ Thu, 23 Jun 2016 11:48:15 +0000 http://cvsgui.org/?p=91 Continue readingWinCvs has a documentation]]> At least ! For us it’s great relieve, because it was becoming a real problem : despite the great support
of the WinCvs users on the cvs mailing list, the volume of informations necessary to get started
an increasing number of new users was critical.

So Don Harper did the the most difficult : getting started with the documentation. I’d like to thank him in
name of all the WinCvs users, and especially in name of the new users. I personally like it,
and especially this step by step approach. This documentation refer to the current 1.0.6 version. I still
recommend for the new cvs administrators to read the cvs documentation (translated in WinHelp
format by Norbert Klamann) *before* using WinCvs, and also to experiment cvs first using the command
line tool.

Still there are two different things we should accomplish together :

– First let’s maintain it. Please send your comments if you find a mistake of if you’d like some points
to be enhanced. Don didn’t offer to maintain it all, but he can probably have a look sometimes to
some proposals. Feel free to write on your own a whole chapter (English fluent required !). I’ve
heard also about some translations, especially from the Japanese users : if you want to translate it,
please drop me an email first so I get sure this is done once.
– Second let’s continue to reply to simple questions about WinCvs. As WinCvs is more and more used,
people are asking for a real professionalism and support. If you can provide a commercial support, please
drop me an email, I’d be glad to put a link on you guys (I’m not sure if Cyclic is supporting WinCvs, but
they may have some contacts who do it).

WinCvs goes 1.1 http://cvsgui.org/wincvs-goes-1-1/ Sat, 21 May 2016 11:47:33 +0000 http://cvsgui.org/?p=88 Continue readingWinCvs goes 1.1]]> Because of the increasing number of WinCvs/MacCvs developers, I decided to get started on
a WinCvs 1.1 beta project. Several peoples requested things and now we need a developer version
in order to do it.

I’m more and more surprised by the quantity of good patches : please keep going, I’m always happy
to implement your work and put your name in the ChangeLog !

Now a little personal thing for the Mac users : I should be back to macintosh (and in US) by the 1st of July.

still growing because of the contributions of the cvs users.

This new place is dedicated for all the cvs users who want cvs to spread all over
this (unsafe) source world ;-).

Thanks to LiveWire Inc. (http://www.lw.net) which hosts now WinCvs.org for the
USA and paid the domain name registration for the WinCvs users.

Some of the capabilities of MacCvs are :

* Majority of the cvs commands are exposed through the interface (add, admin,
checkout, commit, diff, edit, editors, history, import, init, log, login,
logout, release, remove, rdiff, rtag, status, tag, unedit, update, watch,
watchers.)
* Several authentications : password, ssh, rsh, kerberos.
* Goodies : graphical revision viewer.
* Automatic binary wrapping (Internet Config, HQX, AppleSingle), TCP compression,
cvs-1.10 support, TCL macros and more.
* Compatible with the Mozilla cvs server.
* cvs mpw tool.

Both MacCvs and cvs are distributed under the terms of the GPL. MacCvs
